Michael ‘Sap’ Tsapazi made his debut for BCC in the 1998/99 season. Before that he was a long-time member of Dianella/Alexander Cricket Club.

Mick was a devastating player who could turn a match with either bat or ball. When batting he was just as comfortable stepping across the crease to flay one over the mid-wicket boundary for 6 as he was delicately dabbing one passed 4th slip for 4. Mick bowled a heavy ball off a few steps and successfully used swing and cut to his advantage. Not many people realised this but he was also a master at imitating the bowling greats through history. He would grant requests throughout a spell and on more than one occasion Merv, Lillee, Pasco or Thommo would claim a wicket for us.

Before coming to BCC, Sap had scored many 50’s and a couple of 100’s. He captained teams to the finals and played WASTCA 1st Grade in season 1997/98 scoring a 50 in one game. Once at Bassendean, Sap immediately settled into the 6th grade side and continued to terrorise batsmen and bowlers alike. Mick captained the 3rd XI for a few years but was unable to secure the elusive premiership.

As the seasons went on, family and work commitments reduced the amount of cricket he was able to play each year but the runs kept flowing. His highest score was against Applecross where he made 162.

In 2013/14, Mick played 8th grade for the first half of the season before joining the 6th grade side. He cemented his spot in the side with a brilliant 91 against Balcatta and a 65* against Bentley.

Sadly, that 65* would be his last innings for BCC as he was cruelly struck down with a brain tumour. Mick fought against his tumour as fiercely as he ever played cricket. He was named 12th man for the 6th Grade Grand Final and finally receiving a Premiership medallion was one of his proudest moments despite not being able to play.

Sap was sadly taken from us in 2015. He will be forever remembered as an amazing friend, loving husband, devoted father and brilliant cricketer. Mick is survived by his wife, Kathy and his three children Phoebe, Mitch and Ally.

BCC honours Mick by presenting the Mick Tsapazi Best Individual Performance annually at our Presentation Night.
